“The Door” published in the magazine “Malegleder- October 2005” of Norway.
By Jariya Kiranantawat, Thailand

I was inspired by Knut Kjeldsen’s door picture published in Malegleder-January issue, and I wanted to do a Trompe I’ oil painting on a wall, as I used to see some hotel in Bangkok. Therefore, I made this on a plate for a friend. My composition means placing the door, which is the center of interest in the central area of the plate, but little bit to the right hand side, and as a balance, I added a chair in the far left. The light goes through the door from right to left, so the shadow goes left. The outlining technique was used for detailing trees, mountains, bricks and chair. Lastly, I personalized the piece by writing the receiver’s name on the upper left, and mine on the lower right. I selected a red-brown monochrome to achieve a classic and rich look, and its mixture with white or black was used for three-dimensional painting.

First Fire
Freehand-sketched the view with pencil Stabilo # 8046 onto the plate.
Mixed the overglaze powder- Red Brown with outlining oil, and I started drawing from the inside to outside by using a pen to outline the mountains, trees, each brick, and the chair. Fired at 800 degrees C.
Second Fire:
Mixed Red Brown with a little white and painted with non-drying medium, applying the colours with square-shader brush to all light areas, then Red Brown to shades area. Then I used a sponge to dab the mixed colour onto the plate rim. Fired at 800 degrees C.
Third Fire:
Added a darker shade of Red Brown by mixing Black to Red Brown with non-drying medium, and applied to all dark areas. Mixed Red Brown and Black with outlining oil and used pen to write the receiver’s name and my name. Dabbed darker shade of Red Brown on the rim, then fire at 800 degrees C.
Tips:
Motif should be originally created and free hand drawn to make each piece unique and the receiver proud of its exclusivity. I used colours which are all intermixble to make my own palette with unlimited colours. Unleaded paint!
